About Me
Originally from New Jersey, Julia Carey is a flutist and educator currently residing in Miami, Florida. As a solo player, Julia finds her interests in seemingly the extremes of classical music as a flutist: music from the Baroque period and contemporary, 21st-century music. Julia has been awarded many prestigious prizes for her solo performances and in competitions such as the Powell Middleton Scholarship Competition, Music Teacher’s National Association Pennsylvania Young Artist Competitions, and Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Collegiate and Young Artist competitions.
Beyond her solo work, Julia has great joy in performing in chamber ensembles and collaborating with others. Julia is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Chamber Winds, a wind dectet devoted to commissioning new works and educational outreach throughout the Southeastern Pennsylvania school system. In 2022, Pennsylvania Chamber Winds was invited to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association conference, held in Pocono Mountains, PA. At this performance, Julia was a featured soloist in Robert Spittal’s Consort for Ten Winds—a piece the group recorded just months prior. Julia has also participated in various chamber ensembles in Miami, including two wind quintets, flute quintets, and a trio with saxophone and clarinet. In 2022, the Frost Graduate Wind Quintet was selected to perform in a masterclass with the world-renown group, Calefax Reed Quintet, where the ensemble played Nino Rota’s Petite Offerande Musicale.
With her roots in music education, Julia is committed to fostering a deep love for music in students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. With this, Julia is also a graduate teaching assistant with the Shalala MusicReach program at the Frost School of Music, where she teaches Music Entrepreneurship classes for students grades 6-12 and provides beginning band support at Miami Arts Studio. Julia also meshes her love for teaching and flute with being an active member in professional organizations, like the National Flute Association, Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia, New Jersey Flute Society, and the Flute Society of Washington. She loves serving the flute community in these organizations and is the Exhibitor Showcase and Concert Coordinator for the National Flute Association. Julia also teaches flute privately, both online and in the greater Miami area. Her students have received scholarships to attend universities for music major and minor programs, attended district, regional, and all-state conferences, and place in high seats in their own school music programs. Above all else, however, members of the JVC Flute Studio become life-long learners and lovers of music.
Julia holds two bachelor’s degrees in music education and Instrumental Performance from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she studied flute with Dr. Kimberly Reighley and Professor Frances Tate. At WCU, she was also a member of the Honors College where she completed a senior capstone thesis, titled Developing a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Music Curriculum, which focused on increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the curriculum at the Wells School of Music at WCU. Julia most recently studied at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where she earned a master’s degree in Instrumental Performance. At Frost, she studied with Dr. Jennifer Grim and was one of the flute studio graduate teaching assistants as well as a flute/piccolo fellow with the Henri Mancini Institute Orchestra.
